If you are looking to update your wardrobe for the New Year whilst saving your pennies then it may be wise to invest in items that are suitable for both work and play.
One item I have my eye on is this dogtooth pencil skirt from Topshop. For just £35 this features a really cute ruffle detailing and an exposed zip at the back.
For the office, team with a simple plain blouse or round neck slim fit Tee along with a skinny cardy and heels.
For play, capitalise on the tweed-like dogstooth qualities and quirk up with fun pieces such as a vintage blazer nipped in at the waist, a clashing print blouse or sculptural heels.

Skirts are often over looked for a traditional dress, but they’re often a cheaper alternative, as you can pair them up with wardrobe staples you’ve already got. This ASOS Harlequin Full Skirt is perfect for more casual social events, it’ll keep you looking effortlessly smart but not over the top. The harlequin print has been big this season, tying in with the circus theme. The metallic finish and lining make the skirt flare out into a cute bell shape and it sits just above the knee.
The bright jewel colours bang on trend this season, and to make them stand out all you need do is team the skirt up with some black tights and black on top. A vest would work well, with a cardy over the top, or a black jumper tucked in. Team it with some patent courts for an evening look, or pumps or brogues to wear during the day.
You can get the Harlequin Skirt for £35 from ASOS now.

Whilst some might argue that Topshop prices are expensive enough already, their Premium range offers you the chance to own pieces that are just that bit more special, for a slightly heftier price tag. There are also Petite, Tall and Maternity sections in the range, so there’s something for everyone.
The Fringe Mini Skirt from the range doesn’t have too much of a Premium price label at £38 and would be a great addition to your party clothes wardrobe. We’ve already seen the fringing detail up and down the catwalk, inspired by the flapper dresses of the 1920s. Gold is a timeless colour and perfect for nights out and parties. Team it with something simple – a black vest or a plain shirt tucked in.
You can have a look at the whole Premium range over at the Topshop website.

I adore this navy pleated latex skirt by Mattijs van Bergen. The jewel-like colour is radiant due to the unusual latex material and the black metallic trim sets of the fabric fantastically. There is also a feature zip fastening running down the back of the skirt – is there no end to it’s beauty?
The tight pleat gives this a strict neat feel which combined with the colour and fabric creates a fresh spin on the heritage trend.
When pulling an outfit together everything must bow down to this statement piece – go for a striking look with towering heels, opaques and an understated dark top – or just go all out and add the matching jacket.

I love the combination of these two garments together; they make a great casual outfit with a cool sporty edge! The jacket is a Rick Owens creation; it is a patchwork jacket featuring panels of contrasting fabrics such as metallic, denim and fur trims. The detailing on this piece is amazing, there is so much work involved; I particularly like the knot detail at the front of the jacket. This jacket costs £1,780.00!
To compliment the jacket I have chosen an effortlessly chic skirt by Maison Martin Margiela, you may recognise the zip design from the must have leather leggings that are causing a stir amongst fashion followers around the globe! This skirt costs £300, it is a great staple piece; it can be dressed down for day wear with thick black tights and boots, then for night time it can be worn with bare legs and some towering heels!
You can buy these items from Browns fashion online.

With hit movies such as ‘The Edge of Love’ hitting the silver screen with their vintage 40’s costume, and D&G conceptualising a whole collection on the Queen, it was inevitable that the pleat skirt would be back in town.
Heritage chic is set to be a big look next season and whilst tweed will be a key fabric, a good staple piece is a basic black pleat skirt. Perfect for work and play, it can be dressed up or down depending on your schedule.
Few people will be brave enough to make like D&G and copy the queen so closely, so on a lesser in-your-face level, make like Land Girls and team with tough boots, loose layered knits and scarves for 1940’s wartime chic.
For a highstreet bargain grab this black pleat skirt form Esprit for £48. If you have the cash to splash hit Net-a-porter for Alexander McQueens High-waisted pleated skirt for £670.

I absolutely love this tweed bell skirt by Oscar de la Renta. Bang on trend it features so many key elements for nest season – the tulip shape, sludgy colour palette and the vintage fabric; tweed, which stormed the catwalk at Burberry’s A/W 08 collection.
For the office – team this piece with a starched crisp white pussy-bow blouse, opaques and patent black sky scraper heels. Throw on some oversized accessories for maximum impact; stack chunky bracelets on one arm, a belt or chunky black and gold ring for added drama.
For daytime – team with a plain scoop-neck white vest and throw over a skinny black cardy; pushing up the sleeves to keep the upper half structured and minimal feel to make way for the statement piece on the lower half on the body. A oversized long pendant style necklace will give the look a polished feel without feeling too dressy.

I am really feeling the skirt and vest combo right now and here is one of my favourites… By Twenty8Twelve the Raw Silk Pleat Tiered Circle Skirt worn with the Double Button Tank top tucked in.
They pair together so well, including the colour and cut. The pleated full skirt is cream, silk, falls to the knee and has a tiered frill hem. While the tank is available in red or green, is made of a soft modal wool mix with a deep scoop neck and has popper buttons that are concealed. Ultra chic and super stylish this outfit is great for your party nights worn with tights and heels and for the shopping days with some ballet pumps.
The Twenty8Twelve skirt is £160 and the Twenty8Twelve tank is £55 and they are both available at ASOS online.

I love this new skirt from Warehouse, and with the puffball skirt set to be popular for Autumn I think this is a great investment. Pair with shoe boots and a loose fitting white scoop-neck vest tucked in for a casual look. Add a structured short tux jacket and thick tights to keep out the cold.
I think this style skirt is a great piece for next season as it can be dressed up or down, it adds curves in all the right places and emphasises the waist. The multi-layers gives this punk appeal.
