The Return of the Gladiator

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

Miu Miu Gladiator SandalsGladiator sandals are set to be hot property yet again this summer. the romanesque footwear is already creeping into the high street, with a few subtle changes from last year’s versions. The studs and detailing is gone, and we’re seeing more and more metallic rather than brown and tan colours.

These ones by Miu Miu are great if you’re feeling flush. Combining this summer’s new nude tones trend with gold, these are simple but effective. the combination of the two colours gives them that expensive looking edge, and they’d set off bronzed legs perfectly. the multiple buckle detail keeps them interesting, but luckily you don’t need to fasten and undo them all to get them on and off!

They’d work well with beach wear, or just casual weekend clothes. They cost £303 and are available from Net A Porter now.

Skirts Go Bodycon

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

New Look Plain Stretch SkirtWe’ve had bodycon dresses, and now get ready for the bodycon skirt, slightly kinder to the figure, and a welcome change from all those billowy, floral numbers.

A simple, understated piece, this skirt is great for wearing with an interesting top to balance it out, and can be worn with flats and thick tights or leggings for a daytime look, or team it with bare legs or sheer tights and heels for the evening.

New Look have got the perfect one – the Plain Stretch Skirt is made of stretchy jersey material, sits above the knee, and has a waistband to give it a finished look. It’s available in three different colours – grey, a deep pink, and blue costing a minuscule £8 each. If you’re feeling brave, there’s also a black and white striped or red and white striped version for £12 – but remember what horizontal stripes can do!

Match these skirts with an embellished top, a vest, or a shirt – it’ll work with almost anything as long as it isn’t too long.

ASOS Mid-Season Sale

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

ASOS One Shoulder Colourblock DressASOS have launched their mid-season sale today, and there’s up to 50% off all their ranges. Whilst some of it is decidedly winter-y and last season, having a virtual rummage through can pay off, with some great items that are perfect for spring/summer.

This ASOS One Shoulder Colourblock Jersey Dress ticks loads of major trend boxes for S/S09 – one shouldered, colour blocking, and body-con. Whilst perhaps black isn’t the number one colour for spring, it does set a tan off perfectly – fake or otherwise. This dress would be great for a night out teamed with bare legs (weather permitting) or black tights. In order to fully embrace the colour block trend try matching it with some purple shoes and accessories.

At £18 this isn’t too much of a bank-breaker, and would see you through any social occasion this spring. ASOS currently have all sizes in stock, but as usual with sales, they tend to sell out quick!

Animal Print Takes Over

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

New Look Animal Print VestAnimal print tops are all over the high street at the moment, and make an interesting change from a plain t-shirt or tunic top. Match them with jeans or leggings for a casual weekend look. From zebra to snake to leopard, there’s a huge array of different prints available in this versatile trend.

Having scoured the high street I can definitely confirm that this trend is pretty much in every single shop, so there’s a huge amount of choice. One of my favourites though is this Animal Oversized Vest from New Look, for the bargain price of £16. The grey and black leopard print also features some blue and purple detailing, and a nice splash of colour. Wear it loose with jeans or leggings, or add some black tights, heels, and a belt for an exciting night look, and match some purple and blue accessories for a truly co-ordinated, pulled together look.

And the best part? No animals were harmed in the making of these clothes!

The New Style Scarf

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Alexander McQueen Skull and Crystal ScarfAs we all know long scarves bundled around the neck are a popular and easy way to style any outfit, and I love the new style of scarves that are around now; ‘in’ are those that are print based and ‘out’ are the old style woven, houndstooth and check varieties.

New life as been breathed into our staple accessory and bold graphic prints are the way to go. Alexander McQueen is my favourite designer for the print trend and I think this crystal and skull print is absolutely divine.

At £390 it’s pricey but hopefully the highstreet will follow suit and supply something similar soon! You can pick this item up from Matches.

Cute Rompersuit

Monday, April 6th, 2009

3.1 Phillip Lim Ikat Print RomperI love this bright little jumpsuit as it’s a perfect way to meet both the playsuit and ‘one world’ trend in one hit. Simply team with a tribal style over-sized necklace and heels, to create the exotic look that this trend is all about.

Think hot colours, clashing and tons of jewellery and for inspiration look to the Spring Summer 09 catwalks of Marc Jacobs and Gucci as to how to recreate this trend. I heard someone sum up this trend by trying to achieve the look of a ‘well-travelled woman’ – fresh off the plane from some hot exotic country.

I also like the idea however, of just simply teaming with a plain white t-shirt and flat gladiators for a clean and easy-to-wear summer look.

You can pick up this Ikat print romper by 3.1 Phillip Lim from Net-a-porter for £455.

Designer v Highstreet: Bright Printed Shifts

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Bright Printed ShiftsPrinted shifts are all the rage right now and are an easy and cheap way to rock one of spring /summer’s trends with just one purchase!

The print trend ranges from the dark and moody to the bright and graphic and here are some great options no matter what the budget may be.

The designer option is £2665 and is by Alexander McQueen and available from Net-a-porter. It features a stunning, almost digitally enhanced print, and has sharp lines for a structured shape, as well as an eye catching crystal embellishment at the rear of the dress.

For a mere £49.99 though, you can pick up this great one shoulder paint splash dress from River Island. With the right accessories and shoes it could give those designer frocks a run for their money!

Alternative Spring Dress

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Marc Jacobs Taffeta Stripe Tiered DressNew to the Marc by Marc Jacobs range on Net A Porter this week is this Taffeta stripe tiered dress. Perfect for spring, it makes a change from all those floral prints currently doing the rounds. It would be great as a party dress with heels and a clutch bag, or dress it down for a day look by throwing over a blazer or leather jacket and teaming it with some light coloured flats.

It’s made from taffeta, which can be a bit of a love/hate fabric, but it works really well on the ruffled tiers. As a contrast there’s a striped sweetheart neckline and velvet bows and trim accent the ruffles. The spaghetti straps are adjustable so you can get just the right fit, and they won’t keep falling over your shoulder. The zip at the back is fully hidden – none of this exposed zip we’ve been seeing recently, which can look cheap.

It costs £460 and is available now from Net A Porter.

Kate's New S/S 09 Collection Launches Tomorrow

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

Kate Moss for Topshop Sequin DressFor those of you who are a fan of Kate Moss’s collections for Topshop, you’ll probably already be aware that her Spring Summer 09 line launches tomorrow, Thursday 2nd April.

This is her 9th line for the store and features some great little pieces. From checking out the sneak peeks I really like the look of her sequined dresses – especially this cream one which is great for the 20’s revival for frocks this summer.

She has also reworked three of Liberty’s iconic floral prints and has them featured on all sorts, from ditsy dresses, to cardies to scarves – perfect for the popular floral trend.
