The New Sensible Shoe

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Deck ShoesSensible shoes are back, and this spring, instead of ballet pumps, the shoe of choice to slip on is a moccasin or deck shoe.

These sensible but sylish flats are already making their way into the high street, and here’s a couple favourites. First up are these Black Patent Tassel Moccasins from Dorothy Perkins, at a bargain £18. These are perfect for embracing the trend subtely, and are perfect for the office or casual.

If you want to go all out and pretend you really do own a boat, then look no further than ASOS’s Leather Suede Deck Shoe, costing £27.50. Available in three colours, they have a chunky white sole and cute eyelet and lace detail. Team them with jeans and a nautical style top for a weekend look.

Snap up a pair of these now and you’ll be all set come the spring!

Body Con with a Twist

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Quontum Curve Neon Stripe Body Con DressThe body con dress trend is still one of the most popular items to slip on for a night out at the moment, and if you’ve got the figure for it it’s definitely the ultimate LBD to pull out the wardrobe.

Whilst the all-black look one is a classic, if you’re getting a bit bored of it then try injecting a bit of colour with this Quontum Curved Neon Stripe Body Con Dress. The strapless black dress is broken up with a swash of neon colour across the waist at the front, and the curved stripe complements the shape of the dress. If you want to add more colour trying matching a pair of tights to one of the coloured stripes. And don’t forget some chunky black heels- patents would look great. The dress is 88% cotton and 12% lycra, so you can just wriggle into it and it’ll stretch where required.

Perhaps a bit of a daring item, but if you’re brave enough it’s guaranteed to ignite the dancefloor!

It costs £48 and is available from ASOS now in the colours shown and one with green, purple and blue stripes.

Feather Print Sweat

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Topshop Feather Print SweatI love the new print trend and this top is no exception. Following the key rules of carrying off this trend; it features a solid block colour with an accent of print making it a really easy piece to wear.

Simply throw on with super skinny stone wash jeans and killer heals for effortless chic and a great relaxed Sunday look.

The cape style sleeves give this basic sweat a stylish feel and the price isn’t bad either. At £25 from Topshop it’s an affordable way to buy into the trend.

What’s more, from what I’ve seen so far this trend seems to be applied mainly to shift dresses more so than sports type wear, and I would get more wears-per-buy from a sweat top like this than a smart shift. I’m sold!

The Flat Sole Gladiator

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Topshop Hectic Zip Back GladiatorsAs per last year, the flat sole gladiator is set to be a fashion staple this summer, and this pair from Topshop is on the top of my list.

At £25 this gladiator sandal is 100% leather and features a stylish zip back detail. As well as the fetching gunmetal colour I love the multi straps which feature some cut out detailing, making these seriously trend-ticking for your toes!

Perfect for throwing on with anything from a floral dress to stonewash denim or your LBD these will seamlessly take you through the whole summer and beyond.

S/S 09 Trend: Western

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

ASOS Leather Tie ShoeA slightly tricky trend to get right next season has is Western, which will be making a mark in the form of fringed dresses, worn-in washed-out denim and fringed leather.

If you want to embrace the trend then try not to do so literally – that means no to the Givenchy inspired leather chaps, and leave your Stetson at the door. Instead, play down the look with one Western style item paired with simple ordinary pieces.

These shoes are a perfect way to enjoy the trend – the contrast zig-zig edging and ankle cuff design discretely nod to the western trend without being too full on.

You can pick these up from ASOS for £39.50

Tribal Jewellery

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

ASOS Long Fringe NecklaceOne of the main aspects of the New Exoticism trend are tribal influences – seen in everything from shoes to accessories. Think Masai jewellery – rich terracotta colours, beading etc.

I love this necklace from ASOS – featuring a tarnish style plate with long metal fringing it has an exotic feel and will be sure to make a statement. The chain is extra long so the necklace has a great oversized feel.

Fringing will be just as popular next season as it is currently and as the exoticism trend is all about piling on the jewellery – lots of wear can be had out of this item.

You can pick this up from ASOS for £9.97

New Sonia by Sonia Rykiel

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Sonia by Sonia RykielSonia Rykiel is an iconic French designer, and her bright jumpers proved fashion doesn’t always have to be serious to look great.

Her Sonia by Sonia Rykiel line is available from ASOS, and there are some great new items just in. They’re not bargains, but aren’t bad for some top quality designer pieces.

The Heart Stripe Long Top, £89 on the left, is unmistakably Sonia Rykiel, and will go with absolutely everything. Wear it loose over leggings, or tucked into a skirt or jeans. And made from 100% cotton it’ll keep you warm and won’t aggravate!

If you’re looking for more of a statement piece, then the Stripe Shift Dress definitely hits the mark. A classic loose, high neck, short sleeves shift shape, this is a timeless dress, brought up to date with the exposed zip on the back. The stripes means it needs minimal accessories, and would look great with bare legs or black tights. It costs £220.

You can see the rest of the Sonia by Sonia Rykiel range over at ASOS now.

The Snakeskin Gladiator

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

River Island Snakeskin GladiatorA key item for the closet this spring / summer has to be the snakeskin gladiator. For heels this summer, snakeskin is the number one trend and gladiator styles will remain just as popular as ever and are great for toughening up shifts and floral dresses, which are also set to be huge.

I adore this pair from River Island, they have everything going for them – the shoe boot style, the mid heel, the light golden beige snakeskin which is perfect for teaming with the aforementioned make-up colours and the wooden heal which lends itself for the new exoticism trend with it’s earthy textures – I can’t fault them.

What’s more the elegant drop-cut of the top strap helps to combat any possible unsightly ‘cankles’ and at £68.50 they’re not a bad price either.

Get yours whilst there’s still some left!

S/S 09 Trend: Make-up Colours

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

Donna Karan Crushed Linen DressOne easy trend to embrace next season is has been entitled ‘make-up colours’ or ‘forever pieces’. Elle described this as ‘think tomorrows antique’s today – pure, washed out, romantic’.

I love this notion and this crushed linen dress by Donna Karan is a great example of the trend, it’s soft cream hues and simple shape are very wearable and never before have creases looked so good!

The dress features silk blend panels a square neckline and ever so handy pockets art the side. Team with a white blazer and gladiator heels for a modern look.

You can buy yours from Net-a-porter for £1453.

The New Jumpsuit

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

Belle & Bunty for ASOS Draped Halterneck Harem JumpsuitIf you weren’t quite brave enough to try a jumpsuit first time around then don’t worry – there’s a second chance as they’re still big news for S/S 09. Now we’re (supposedly) heading towards warmer weather, jumpsuit designs are moving away from looking like head to toe boiler suits in dark colours, and have got a more feminine, carefree look to them.

This Belle & Bunty for ASOS Draped Halterneck Harem Jumpsuit is perfect for spring evenings, and combines the jumpsuit with harem trousers – another key trend. The halter neck gives it a less intense look, and the contrasting black waist band helps break up the colour. Made from 55% silk it won’t grip or cling in all the wrong places.

It costs £79 – not too bad as you’re getting trousers and a top – and is available now.
