The perfect summer dress can be an elusive thing. You want one that makes a statement, but can be worn year after year, one that’s slightly weather proof (or at least won’t blow up in the wind and won’t go streaky when it rains) and of course, it has to be white.
So after much searching, this Ivory Ruffle Hem Dress popped up at Debenhams. Simple, but with a beautiful ruffle detail along the bottom with gold stitching it’s got everything you need in a summer dress. It’s not too low at the front, so works well for formal occasions, and it’s lined, so has a bit of structure to it. It also ties at the back to help create a waist.
At £50 it’s probably not the cheapest dress, but it’s not bad value for money either. You can get it online or instores now.

If you thought playsuits were just for daytime playing – looking cute round town and summer garden parties – then think again – this trend is now smartening up and branching out into styles perfect for night time playing too.
This Black bow Playsuit from Dorothy Perkins is perfect for a sophisticated look, with it’s linen finish and wide-legged shorts, as well as a cheeky halter neck and cute bow finish. Team it with all black accessories for a completely polished look, or throw in some colour with a bright clutch bag or shoes.
And even better, it’s also now in the sale, so it’s a bargain at £20. The same style is also available in a grey checked material, which would be perfect for the office, so now you can play all day and all night!

Carrie on Sex and the City was doing it way before the rest of the world, but it seems the tutu is finally making it onto the high street. After the recent trend for ra-ra, tulip and bell shaped skirts, designers have taken the next step and gone for the tutu.
Perfect for summer, this is a great alternative to the maxi for a statement dress, and the high street has given it a grungey, rock chick edge, so you won’t look too much like a ballerina.
Topshop have this Tutu Stud Dress – a black vest top with a layered tutu dress, cross-over straps and stud detail along the waist line. They’ve gone easy on the netting, so it’s easy to move about and sit down in. Match it with sky-scraper sandals and a leather jacket for the ultimate grunge look with a sophisticated edge. It costs £60 and is available online now.

There’s one trend that seems to be dividing the fashion world at the moment – the crop top. As part of the 80s revival, the top we thought had gone out with the Spice Girls is back, and slowly infiltrating the high street.
Personally I reckon if you’ve got the stomach for it (literally), then give it a go. If you’re looking to fully the 80s look then team it with acid or stone wash skinny jeans and heels for a quirky night time look, or if you want a twist on a summer day look, then try it will a floaty skirt. A crop top would also work well over a body con vest dress to add a splash of colour or texture, or with a body con skirt.
Topshop have got a great range of crop tops. The Sequin Zebra Crop Vest Top on the left would be a perfect statement top paired with jeans, and the loose fitting means you won’t need to put in too many hours at the gym. The racer back adds detail and makes it nice and airy for hot days, and animal prints and motifs have been huge this summer, as have sequins. It costs £16.
If you want to keep it traditional, then there’s the Crop Crew Tee. It’s a classic square T-Shirt shape, just slightly shorter. You can wear this with high waisted jeans or shorts if you don’t fancy bearing all. It’s available in black, as in the picture, or white, nude or light grey. It costs £10.

One of our very own Fashion Chicks writers, Carly, is making her own exciting mark on the fashion industry, as today sees her amazing designs being launched by River Island!
She’s designed one of this summer’s staple pieces – a jumpsuit – that you can buy from today from the River Island website.
The Bandeau Playsuit is available in classic black, as in the picture, or a cream/beige colour. With a twist on the standard jumpsuits, it’s got an adjustable halter strap, as well as a drawstring waist and stud detailing. It’s also got the hareem pants shape, with cuffs and the bottom so it’ll fit all heights.
It comes in sizes 6 to 18 and costs £39.99, so now’s your chance to get your hands on a piece from an up-and-coming designer, and remember, you saw her here first!

Marble wash jeans are set to be huge this summer and their punk appeal makes a great contrast to all the pretty floral dresses swishing about this summer.
I love this Iggy Black Marble Wash Skinny Jean from ASOS which feature antique silver buttons and rivets. Team with a fitted graphic print or rock tee and sky high heels for an effortless look.
Victoria Beckham has been spotted wearing a very similar pair, teaming hers with a Balmain leather jacket and patent black heels.
Pick yourself up a pair from ASOS for just £35!

We know floral prints are a big deal this summer, but generally the high streets are limiting the flowers to dresses and tops. Over at Urban Outiftters though, they’ve turned the trend on it’s head, with these Printed Floral Leggings.
With a cute print of pink and purple flowers and green leaves on a black background, these are a great way to nail the floral trend without splashing out on an expensive dress. Keep it simple by teaming them with a black or white vest, and heels, flats or sandals.
The leggings are full length so perfect for the changeable weather, and 100% cotton so lovely and comfy.
They costs £24 and are available from the Urban Outfitters website or in stores.

As we know stonewash denim is huge this season – and whether you opt for some staple skinnies or dabble in some swimwear there are tons of options out there for embracing this trend!
Here are my top four picks of the best pieces in the shops!
Marc Jacob’s denim bikini is set to be popular this summer and you can pick it up from ASOS for £85 for the top and another £85 for the bottoms.
I love these denim shorts by True Religion which come in at £145 and are available from Net-a-porter.
No summer wardrobe is complete without a denim skirt and this lantern shape number from Topshop is a great piece and costs just £32.
Finally if you don’t like to wear stonewash you can always carry it instead with this denim holdall, which is a great bargain at £28 from ASOS!

This is a great little dress for the summer! It hits the eighties revival trend with it’s ra-ra tiered skirt, and the stone wash denim trend with it’s bodice, so ticks lots of boxes and is really cute looking too!
The sweetheart neckline adds to its girly appeal and I love ASOS’s styling suggestion of teaming it with sandals by day and rope wedges at night.
At £38 it’s not bad – most likely cheaper than a top and skirt put together!
You can pick one up over at ASOS by following this link.
